Lately I've been listening almost exclusively to this unique time period of the Dead. I have my favorites, most notably 11-6-79 and 12-31-81, but was wondering if some of you generous souls might let me know what some of your favorites from this time period are. Right now I'm listening to a sweet Wheel from 8-28-81.

Don't know how many times I have to say it, but '81 was the year of the Dead.

5/1/81 - Great Let it Grow, one of the best shows I've heard, especially the AUD source
http://www.archive.org/details/gd81-05-01.wise.clugston.2218.sbeok.shnf

7/14/81 - Truckin>Eyes is great, Bird Song is great, Shakedown is great, it's just a great show
http://www.archive.org/details/gd81-07-14.aud.munder.9794.sbeok.shnf

9/12/81 - I'd get this just for the China>Rider, Scarlet>Fire, Prophet>Eyes, but it helps that the rest of the show is just as good

10-10-80, 6-19 through 6-21-80, 8-16-80 (wonderful china rider), 11/29/80 (Shakedown > Frnklins)

5-6-81, 3-9-81, 3-10-81, 8-28-81, The Europe tour in October 81 is vastly underrated.

You're on the right track Trips, especially with all the great recommendations made above. Let me also add that originally 1982 was my favorite year with too many good shows to list, but you can start with 4-14-82, 4-19-82 and anything between 7/31 and 8/10. After I got off my sound board high-horse I started downloading 1980 and 1981 and realized what gems these 2 years are. 3-7-81, 3-9-81, 3-28-81, 5-1-81, 8-27-81, 9-12-81, 10-12-81 and 10-19-81 are all great shows. Just recently I've come to the conclusion that 1980 is just as great. Try 5-8-80, 5-10-80, 5-12-80 and anything during the week of 8/31 to 9/6/80. Grab all these shows now while you can as who knows how long they'll be around.

"Trips are for Kids:"
...the acoustic shows from the Fall of 1980 provide Brent with the opportunity to shine at times. (I've always liked the acoustic "Reckoning" album but others here may provide better leads.)
I'm sure it's probably been mentioned already, but Brent provided some true joy for Jerry during the "Scarlet > Fire" transition from Nov. 1, 1979.

Thanks for the nice post; brings back some good memories and more opportunity to go back in time, ---- AshesRising

And they sang "Austin, Texas fourth day of July" (1981). Check it out and prepare to smile.
